In this lesson, you will learn about Pinyin tones. Mandarin Chinese is a tonal language, which means the meaning of a word can change depending on the tone used.


1️⃣ What Are Tones?

A tone is the pitch or voice movement used when pronouncing a syllable.

Example:

  • ma can have different meanings depending on tone


2️⃣ The Four Main Tones

🔹 First Tone (¯) — High & Flat

  • Example:

  • Sound: steady and high

  • Like singing a long, flat note


🔹 Second Tone (´) — Rising

  • Example:

  • Sound: rising, like asking a question

  • “What?”


🔹 Third Tone (ˇ) — Falling then Rising

  • Example:

  • Sound: goes down, then up

  • Most difficult tone for beginners


🔹 Fourth Tone (`) — Sharp Falling

  • Example:

  • Sound: strong and quick

  • Like giving a command


3️⃣ Neutral Tone

  • Light and short

  • No tone mark

  • Example: ma


4️⃣ Tone Practice Tips

  • Practice tones slowly

  • Exaggerate tone movement at first

  • Listen carefully and repeat aloud
